Finding Widgets, Players, Etc. For Your Blocks
In my previous drop I pointed out the great features afforded by Drupal blocks. One of the great features I mentioned was the ability to add widgets (which are basically mini applications) from other sites in order to add nice functionality to your Drupal site. Rather than simply tease you with that notion I figured I would follow up with a list of places where I've found useful widgets to spruce up my Drupal sites.
- YouTube - Whether it's a video you uploaded yourself or just something that is appropriate for your site, YouTube is a great place to get content from. Just copy and paste the embed code into your block. Even better, YouTube allows you to create custom players that can update with new content automatically. It's important to note that almost every video content site will allow you to grab special embed codes and players as well.
- Widgetbox - They host a wide variety of widgets that you can add to your site. These widgets allow you to dynamically display photos, videos, rss feeds and much more. For example, I use the following MLB Standings widget on a baseball oriented Drupal site.
- Flickr - Most people know that this site is a great place to find photos. You can easily create slideshows to place in blocks by using the Flickr Slideshow Generator. More advanced users can get a lot of mileage combining a Flickr photo feed with the excellent JW Image Rotator.
- Twitter, FriendFeed, Jaiku - All three of these very popular social websites offer embed codes that you can post in a block to display a stream of your updates as they occur.
These are just a few ideas. More are certainly welcome in the comments.
