An Easy Way To Try Drupal
As Drupal continues to grow a lot of people are interested in having the opportunity to try out the platform. The web hosting company Dreamhost recently introduced a free service called Dreamhost Apps that allows people to host a variety of social website programs, including Drupal 6, for free.
Until recently these easy installs of Drupal were not very useful because users were limited to core modules and templates. That has changed. Dreamhost has loaded up a number of very useful contributed modules (listed after the break) and added a bunch of contributed templates as well. There are still limitations. You don't have FTP access so you can't add more modules and templates. But the modules and templates available now ensure that you can get a pretty robust learing experience from this simple set up.
The new options also allow site builders to go beyond just learning the system and allow people to create a site that they can go live with as well. At a price of free I think that the Dreamhost App service is a great value and a great opportunity for people looking to launch a low cost Drupal site.

Invitation code =(
Thanks for it, but what's about invitation code? Where can I get it?
Dreamhost Apps Invite Codes
From time to time Dreamhost is posting new codes to their Twitter account at http://twitter.com/DreamHost. People are also requesting individual codes on the Dreamhost blog at http://blog.dreamhost.com/2009/01/09/free-hosting-from-dreamhost-is-here/. Subscribing to the Dreamhost blog at http://blog.dreamhost.com/ is also a good idea as they recently opened up another 10,000 accounts which unfortunately appear to be gone already.
Still Lousy
If they are trying to get people to sign up for paid hosting by offering free accounts then it will back fire.
First, I got can not connect to one click database.
Second, the who server is not responding.
Dreamhost, Yes. Works in your dreams only.
What a waste of time.

Dreamhost Issues
I've personally hosted with DreamHost for a couple of years now and I've generally been happy with what they offer. They have problems from time to time but then again all web hosts have problems. I think they'll be around for a long time.
Dreamhost Apps Open Now
As of 2/18 at 7:20 Eastern Time I see that the page at https://panel.dreamhostapps.com/signup/ is letting people in without a code.
Seems to work -- so far
I just tried it -- took abt. 3 minutes to fill out the setup form. Got a bunch of emails with passwords for all apps (I left them all checked).
So far I've only tried Drupal but it seems to work fine, actually faster than I expected... of course it's brand new with nothing in it but still.
I was surprised at how many modules and themes they have available. Over 40 themes; modules include CCK and Views. Imagefield, not Imagecache -- mine shows the Imagecache fieldset but not Imagecache itself. Still a good list overall.
Whether it keeps working remains to be seen but nothing to lose with a freebie.
Thanks to whoever posted the link. And this looks like a great site! Nice work.
