Installing A Contributed Theme

Lesson Three of my special Getting Started With Drupal series of instructional videos.
This video shows the user how to replace the core Drupal theme (known as Garland) with a contributed theme (in this case Acquia Marina) downloaded from Drupal.org.

Hi Rob,
I love the tutorials, they are helping me understand drupal no end.
The only issue I have is the image quality of the videos.
They look great when they are shown within a page but are way too small, and when you expand to full screen they give me a headache as they are all out of focus.
Is there any chance of a high res option for the tutorials so that people with the available bandwidth can see the videos in their full glory?
Keep up the good work

I'm glad the videos are helping you out. Just about every video has a high resolution option available as a paid download for $2.99 per video. These versions are delivered at the full recorded resolution of the video. See http://learnbythedrop.com/premium-videos for more information.
Hi Rob,
thanks for updating me, I was concentrating so hard on the vids and couldn't see any reference to high res vids I didn't see the premium section.
Now I know, I know where to look :o)
Thanks again

Hi, Rob
Thanks for making these excellent tutorials, I use your tutorial to install Acquia Marina theme. But now the default themes are all gone from admin/sitbulding/themes list.
So is there any way I can go back to the default garland them that comes with drupal. thanks your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated. I am just a beginner with drupal.
Something has definitely gone wrong with your theme install. You should still be able to see all the other installed modules even after you add Acquia Marina or any other contributed theme for that matter.
It's hard to know exactly what went wrong. Take a look at the core theme folder and see if the files for the core themes are still there. If the core themes are not in that folder, upload them again via FTP.
If the core themes are present and you still can't see the default themes then you may want to try and see if anyone on the Drupal.org forums has had a similar issue.
I uploaded the core theme folder again, and now I can see all the themes again. Maybe I messed up something .... anyways thanks
Great video! I loaded the theme as you suggested in the video and I don't see all the options to place a block on the page. For example, I don't see the left navigation, right navigation or a host of other slots to place blocks/nodes, etc. I don't even get the left hand navigation anymore once I switched themes. Thoughts?
Finally, in the theme preference section I got the basic changes but not the full list that you showed on your screen. Thoughts? Thanks.
It sounds like something, though it's very hard to tell, isn't right. My advice is to switch back to the Garland theme see if all the blocks return. If you do that and things return to normal then something is amiss with the theme files you uploaded. Perhaps some were missing. You basically need to retrace your steps. Sometimes that helps to highlight a flaw in the original process.
I'm also assuming that you're on the Acquia Marina theme, which has always seemed to work well for me. If it is another theme you should also check the issue queue for the theme on Drupal.org and confirm that you uploaded a version that is compatible for your version of Drupal. For example, it's possible to download and install a Drupal 5 version of a theme to a Drupal 6 site by accident.
Hi - the Acquia Marina theme wraps the site name rather shortly - is there anyway to change this?
(I'm really pleased to have discovered your excellent video tutorials - they have saved me so much hassle. Thanks!)

Hi Rob,
I have followed your tutorial from lesson one till lesson three. I logged out and i cannot log-in back (in my website, on my computer) only with my username as i didn't put a password on my profil. How should I do to log back in my site?
By the way, I suggest a worldwide competition to choose the best tutorial for learning dropal, for sure you will be among the three best at least! I started learning Joomla and turn to Drupal and (after starting your tutorial) I don't understand why people say that Joomla is the easiest.
I hope to have an answer for my issue.

Hi Rob,
I finally found the password (I was thinking I didn't set a password and by reading my notes again, I found it)!!
Please could you just tell me in case the password was lost how would I solved the problem?
Thanks again
Kevin

I know it sounds very 1999, but I would start by writing the password down, then put it in a text file on your computer and/or use the save password feature in your browser if you can.
If all else fails you can reset the password via the database. I haven't tried the sql statement in the following link but it seems to make sense to me. http://drupal.org/node/14590
Otherwise, thanks for the kudos and I'm glad you got it worked out.
first let me say, love your tutorials so far, though sometimes i think you could include quick little explanations for why certain things have to be done certain ways, such as in the case of the comment i am about to make...
why is it that it is necessary to create a new themes directory in sites/all when there is a themes directory in the top level of the drupal directory? is that just for the core themes or something? i did not try putting a theme in there, and of course if that does not work, i am certainly even more glad i came across this tutorial telling me to do something that would otherwise be counter-intuitive (like creating a whole different theme directory in a whole other location within the tree). that would be one of my chief complaints with drupal, that there are a number of things that are counter-intuitive (which is one reason why as soon as i get myself more up to speed with using it, i will be heading straight over to the usability forum to hopefully make a contribution to the community, based upon my 15 years of experience as a user interface designer).
but again, thanks for helping me jump-start my drupal skills, the tutorials have been invaluable, even for an old dog like me.
ecb...
The "sites" directory isolates the contributed themes, files and modules from Drupal core. So when you have to update Drupal core (you'll notice that Drupal 6 is on version 12 right now) you don't have any chance of wiping out extras that you have added to the site. It also makes for easy backup of anything that you have added to the site in addition to core. My hard and fast rule is not to add things to core because as soon as you do any updates become more complicated.
Hey Rob,
Thank you for all your work here. It is very helpful!
I had signed up for bluehost.com to host a website for me...and through simplescript I can 'instal' drupal there...but I can't figure out how to add themes that way, so I went back and started from your first video and sent up a wamp server...Do you know if there is there a way to then upload that?
Once again, thank you for your help!
You'll need FTP access to your website. Contact your host or check out your website admin panel to see how their FTP works. Some offer a web based option but you can also use a free option like FileZilla (http://filezilla-project.org/) or the Firefox add on FireFTP (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/684). With FTP access you can upload whatever you need to the appropriate directory on your site.
