Installing A Contributed Theme
Lesson Three of my special Getting Started With Drupal series of instructional videos.
This video shows the user how to replace the core Drupal theme (known as Garland) with a contributed theme (in this case Acquia Marina) downloaded from Drupal.org.

video quality
Hi Rob,
I love the tutorials, they are helping me understand drupal no end.
The only issue I have is the image quality of the videos.
They look great when they are shown within a page but are way too small, and when you expand to full screen they give me a headache as they are all out of focus.
Is there any chance of a high res option for the tutorials so that people with the available bandwidth can see the videos in their full glory?
Keep up the good work

Did Ctrl-+ not work for you to enlarge the screen?
High Res Video
Hi Rob,
thanks for updating me, I was concentrating so hard on the vids and couldn't see any reference to high res vids I didn't see the premium section.
Now I know, I know where to look :o)
Thanks again

How to uninstall Acquia Marina Theme?
Hi, Rob
Thanks for making these excellent tutorials, I use your tutorial to install Acquia Marina theme. But now the default themes are all gone from admin/sitbulding/themes list.
So is there any way I can go back to the default garland them that comes with drupal. thanks your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated. I am just a beginner with drupal.
Something Went Wrong
Something has definitely gone wrong with your theme install. You should still be able to see all the other installed modules even after you add Acquia Marina or any other contributed theme for that matter.
It's hard to know exactly what went wrong. Take a look at the core theme folder and see if the files for the core themes are still there. If the core themes are not in that folder, upload them again via FTP.
If the core themes are present and you still can't see the default themes then you may want to try and see if anyone on the Drupal.org forums has had a similar issue.
Thanks for your reply...
I uploaded the core theme folder again, and now I can see all the themes again. Maybe I messed up something .... anyways thanks
Loaded Theme But Don't See All Options
Great video! I loaded the theme as you suggested in the video and I don't see all the options to place a block on the page. For example, I don't see the left navigation, right navigation or a host of other slots to place blocks/nodes, etc. I don't even get the left hand navigation anymore once I switched themes. Thoughts?
Finally, in the theme preference section I got the basic changes but not the full list that you showed on your screen. Thoughts? Thanks.
It sounds like something,
It sounds like something, though it's very hard to tell, isn't right. My advice is to switch back to the Garland theme see if all the blocks return. If you do that and things return to normal then something is amiss with the theme files you uploaded. Perhaps some were missing. You basically need to retrace your steps. Sometimes that helps to highlight a flaw in the original process.
I'm also assuming that you're on the Acquia Marina theme, which has always seemed to work well for me. If it is another theme you should also check the issue queue for the theme on Drupal.org and confirm that you uploaded a version that is compatible for your version of Drupal. For example, it's possible to download and install a Drupal 5 version of a theme to a Drupal 6 site by accident.
Word-wrap in the title
Hi - the Acquia Marina theme wraps the site name rather shortly - is there anyway to change this?
(I'm really pleased to have discovered your excellent video tutorials - they have saved me so much hassle. Thanks!)

Hi Rob,
I have followed your tutorial from lesson one till lesson three. I logged out and i cannot log-in back (in my website, on my computer) only with my username as i didn't put a password on my profil. How should I do to log back in my site?
By the way, I suggest a worldwide competition to choose the best tutorial for learning dropal, for sure you will be among the three best at least! I started learning Joomla and turn to Drupal and (after starting your tutorial) I don't understand why people say that Joomla is the easiest.
I hope to have an answer for my issue.

Hi Rob,
I finally found the password (I was thinking I didn't set a password and by reading my notes again, I found it)!!
Please could you just tell me in case the password was lost how would I solved the problem?
Thanks again

Reset Admin Password
I know it sounds very 1999, but I would start by writing the password down, then put it in a text file on your computer and/or use the save password feature in your browser if you can.
If all else fails you can reset the password via the database. I haven't tried the sql statement in the following link but it seems to make sense to me. http://drupal.org/node/14590
Otherwise, thanks for the kudos and I'm glad you got it worked out.
just curious about directory location for downloaded themes
first let me say, love your tutorials so far, though sometimes i think you could include quick little explanations for why certain things have to be done certain ways, such as in the case of the comment i am about to make...
why is it that it is necessary to create a new themes directory in sites/all when there is a themes directory in the top level of the drupal directory? is that just for the core themes or something? i did not try putting a theme in there, and of course if that does not work, i am certainly even more glad i came across this tutorial telling me to do something that would otherwise be counter-intuitive (like creating a whole different theme directory in a whole other location within the tree). that would be one of my chief complaints with drupal, that there are a number of things that are counter-intuitive (which is one reason why as soon as i get myself more up to speed with using it, i will be heading straight over to the usability forum to hopefully make a contribution to the community, based upon my 15 years of experience as a user interface designer).
but again, thanks for helping me jump-start my drupal skills, the tutorials have been invaluable, even for an old dog like me.

Contributed Theme Directory
The "sites" directory isolates the contributed themes, files and modules from Drupal core. So when you have to update Drupal core (you'll notice that Drupal 6 is on version 12 right now) you don't have any chance of wiping out extras that you have added to the site. It also makes for easy backup of anything that you have added to the site in addition to core. My hard and fast rule is not to add things to core because as soon as you do any updates become more complicated.
Think I messed up...
Hey Rob,
Thank you for all your work here. It is very helpful!
I had signed up for bluehost.com to host a website for me...and through simplescript I can 'instal' drupal there...but I can't figure out how to add themes that way, so I went back and started from your first video and sent up a wamp server...Do you know if there is there a way to then upload that?
Once again, thank you for your help!
FTP Access
You'll need FTP access to your website. Contact your host or check out your website admin panel to see how their FTP works. Some offer a web based option but you can also use a free option like FileZilla (http://filezilla-project.org/) or the Firefox add on FireFTP (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/684). With FTP access you can upload whatever you need to the appropriate directory on your site.
What is the best book on drupal
hey everyone, new to drupal and while the tutorials here are great I am looking for a good development book. There are several in amazon, but I can't tell which is the best book that is not outdated.
Drupal Books
I think it depends what you're trying to do with the site. There are general development books and there are also books that focus on theming and multimedia. I always keep the first edition of Pro Drupal Development (covers Drupal 5) close by but there is a second edition on Drupal 6. At this point any book you by should be focused on developing in Drupal 6. http://www.drupalbook.com/
Thank you for the response.
Thank you for the response.
Basic question
I installed Drupal on a wamp server on my local windows machine to play with it and try and learn it and your videos are soo awesome. My question is, do you upload and install drupal on the webserver for each individual website that you create? For example, if I have the domain www.mysite1.com on a web hosting server, do I upload drupal to that server and start building my www.mysite1.com site through the browser? And I do this for each website? How do you get the url to be www.mysite1.com without the /drupal after it because don't I have to have drupal and all its files in its own directory of the www root? Sorry if these are silly questions.
Uploading Drupal
You have two choices. You can build the majority of your site prior to launch on your local computer or you can do a little configuration locally then do most of the work while Drupal is on the server. In general working locally has the advantage of being quicker and more secure. At some point you'll push the site live and likely end up doing lots of updates while it's on the server.
To address the issue of the domain. Your web host will have a directory that represents the root of your site. You'll probably upload all of your site files to that directory via FTP. I'm assuming that you have created a database on the web and changed your settings.php file to point to that database. So you'll upload all of your Drupal files to the folder that represents the root of your site. Be sure to include the .htaccess file in that upload! When you go to www.mysite1.com you should see your Drupal site. See also http://learnbythedrop.com/drop/132.
Capture Page
Hi,
Can drupal be used for capture pages, can you have boxes in the end for name and email addresses, I have my own autoresponder service, can I use it with drupal?

Mailman Manager
Not sure if you're using custom code or a standard mailing list package. If the code is custom then you'll likely need custom code to integrate with your system. For those using Mailman, which I understand is pretty popular, there is the Mailman Manager module which, "...provides an interface through which users can subscribe to mailing lists run by Mailman." http://drupal.org/project/mailman_manager
Can't install contributed theme!
Hi Rob,
Happy Holidays and thank so much for creating this website!
I've been following your lessons up until this point. But now I'm stuck with not being able to drop the aquaia marina theme onto my test site.
I started out by installing XAMPP, then I bumped into your website and started to dl wampserver and followed your lesson. To keep it short, I couldn't check the rewrite_module on the Apache modules at first. I only did that later on after I installed drupal onto localhost (and delete XAMPP). Could this be the reason why I can't install aquaia marina to my test site?
I followed the steps closely, but I'm not sure why it does not recognize/install the theme.
Installing Acquia Marina
The rewrite module would affect your ability to turn on clean urls but shouldn't affect adding themes. What has happened when you tried to put the acquia marina folder into the sites/all/modules directory?
Nothing happened. I could
Nothing happened. I could copy and paste the aquaia theme in the C:\wamp\www\sites\all\themes or C:\wamp\www\sites\all\modules and they are currently there, but when I went to the localhost website (getting started with drupal), none of them were showing like yours.
I tried to log out, then log back in, but it still not showing as if I have not dropped the theme/module into that folders (sites/all/theme or modules).
Thanks.
thank you very much. it is
thank you very much. it is really usefull to me. i m doing my project using drupal.so thanks again.
contributed theme problem
The videos are great. Thank you very much for your clear and concise explanations.
I have tried to apply the acquia_marina theme as per your video.
When I click on 'save configuration' I get a blank page.
I then returned to the front page and have found that the theme is appled to that and also to 'My account' 'Create content' and 'Log out' but that when I click on 'Administer' I get a blank page ( it takes a long time for the blank page to say done)
I have also tried downloading a couple of other themes and have the same issue. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
thanks
Theme Problems
It could be a lot of things. First of all, you might want to check and see if your web host has any Drupal specific problems or limitations. Some of them do. Next you'll want to make sure that you uploaded all of the files from your contributed theme. Sometimes files get missed and that causes problems. Finally, you could be missing something from your install as well. So perhaps starting from scratch could help. I'd check to see if other Drupallers on your web host have had similar issues first.
Hi Rob, Thanks for replying.
Hi Rob,
Thanks for replying. I'm running drupal locally so I tried stopping and starting the server, and restarting drupal but that didn't make any difference. So I rebooted my pc and found the theme worked fine. I then also did the next lesson and added the extra modules and found I had the same problem...solved again by a reboot. So not quite sure what is going on here but at least its not stopping me getting on.
Re: Installing A Contributed Theme
You really have a very lucid way of explaining things....Once one goes thru the video evrything looks so simple...
Superb...Well done...
